An Introduction to Collaborative Vocal Improvisation
Time & Location
23 Mar 2023, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Stroud, Stroud GL5 2HZ, UK
About the event
Join All Our Voices as we introduce you to the practice of Collaborative Vocal Improvisation.
You might be wondering what Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) is.
CVI is a way of making music using the voice through sound and singing. It doesn't rely on pre-existing songs, instead through the practice of listening, embodiment and CVI forms you learn to follow your impulse and access a deep creativity, opening your mouth and trusting that what emerges is what’s needed, and, over time, being delightfully surprised by what you've created.
It is sometimes thrilling, often playful and deeply connecting. Together we make space for the sacred to emerge through each of us. You don’t have to be a musician or a singer to join us and enjoy the artform but we spend a bit of time each session practising basic musicianship like rhythm and harmony to build confidence and so we can make satisfying music together.
What will we do in the sessions?
We will guide you through the principles and some of the existing CVI forms and over time new or adapted forms will emerge in the creative process between us.
You will have conversations with your inner critic and gain confidence that radiates out into other areas of your life as you learn to trust your instinct, to sing out your unique voice and be witnessed by others.
You will always have a choice about whether you feel ready to do a particular practice and there will be careful holding and guiding principles for keeping anything that comes up in the sessions private and safe. This can be vulnerable work, and is all the more scrumptious for it. Our experience has been that we’ve all gained confidence that radiates out into other areas of our life having learnt to trust our instinct, to sing out our unique voice and be witnessed by others. We wish this for you too.
Who are we?
We are a group of voice practitioners who have all studied CVI and came together at the end of 2021 to practice weekly. By sharing our knowledge and experience with each other we have developed a shared vision, continue to sing together regularly and are now taking steps towards becoming a performance group. You can find more information on the individual practitioners here: withonevoice.co.uk/collective
We'll be co-facilitating the group in duos, and the rest will take part as participants, so there will always be a familiar face leading.
The group is Siobhan Nolan, Varvara Mexi, Sarah-Jane Heath, Pearl Legay-Clarke, Amy Cox, Arabella Gibbins, Brigite Rowan and Jenna Monroe.
What is the Cost?
The cost is by donation. We suggest between £5-8, however we'd still like you to come even if you can't contribute financially right now.
These sessions will run every other Thursday from 6th April onwards 7.30-9pm at the Trinity Rooms, Field Road, Stroud.
We hope to sing with you soon!
